Our destinations vary widely and are chosen for creative inspiration. Past adventures include state parks, old neighborhoods, urban settings, established gardens, historic barns and much more. The majority are within 45 minutes of Bloomington, Indiana, with most much closer and a few further away. Sites are often just steps from parking and most have restrooms. Some include gathering for a brown bag or pitch-in lunch.
How it works
During the pandemic, Upland has created weekly zoom meet-ups. In addition, we have been meeting outside at least twice per month with social distancing and masks, bringing our own chairs and not carpooling. Plein air is one of the few safe pleasures available during this time and continues to bring us together, typically in smaller numbers, but with the same delightful enthusiasm.
After the pandemic, we will revert back to our original schedule:
• Mid January through March, Upland creates indoor events, such as urban sketching in a coffee shop, painting or sketching in interesting places like ballet practice or a museum, visiting an exhibition or participating in a workshop hosted by a member.
• From April through October our destinations are plein air focused with a range of outdoor locations.
• Tuesday morning is our usual time. This is a guideline—we gather at other times, too. Ride-sharing is popular among members.
• Upland events are hosted by members—each member chooses one destination per year.
We are accepting events for Upland’s 2021 schedule now. Come enjoy being creative with us!
